Cash discount programs: what they cost you before they save you
A cash discount program does not delete your processing fees. It raises your posted prices to cover them and gives cash buyers a break at the register. That is legal everywhere in the US — but it changes every price on your menu, board or shelf.
How a cash discount program works
- 1. Raise posted prices by roughly your blended processing rate — usually 3% to 4%.
- 2. Post required signage at the entrance and at the point of sale stating that posted prices include a card charge and cash receives a discount.
- 3. Apply the discount at the register for cash payers; the receipt must show the discount as a line item.
- 4. Keep paying your processor on every card sale — the fee never went away, your customers absorbed it.

The version where nobody pays the 3%
When a customer pays with crypto, the transaction never touches Visa or Mastercard. There is no interchange to absorb, pass along or discount around. You post one honest price, the customer pays it, and the full amount settles to you in about three seconds. Merchants typically run this alongside their existing card terminal and use the built-in rewards program to steer regulars toward the fee-free option.
